Although the bedroom is located in a green and tranquil environment, it is not far from the historic centre of Berlin. Easy access to public transportation (5 and 2 minutes to the street car) one may easily travel to for example: The Friedrichstrasse, Museuminsel, Alexanderplatz and Unter den Linden in approx. 15-20 minutes. In the Pankow district (located within 2 underground or street car stations) is the most well-know bohemian neighbourhood in Berlin Prenzlauer Berg, with many cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, cinemas, alternative theatres, galleries, interesting artistic projects and designer shops.
The apartment is situated in Pankow, in the Schlosspark (founded by Peter J. Lenne). The Baroque Castle situated in the Niederschöhausen (1701 from J.F: Eosander) was the residence of Queen Elisabeth-Christine, the wife of Freidrich des Grossen. From 1949 it was the ministry headquarters for the government of the DDR (under Wilhelm Pieck), who lived protected in the neighbouring “small city,” (Villenviertel around the ring Majakowski). Afterwards, it served as a castle for guests of the government (for example: Arafat, Fidel Castro and Gorbatschow all stayed here). In 1989/90 this site held the Centre Round Table and negotiations were conducted regarding the German reunification in the famous two-plus-four conversations. Today there are classical concerts and other cultural acts. The castle should be restored and reopened as a museum. Pankow was originally an idyllic fishing village situated in Panke. The beautiful stone church is 777 years old (1230), and in the second half of the last century the two neo-gothic towers were added, with the project from F.A. Stüler, also in this era in Niederschönhausen and Pankow, there were many summer residences constructed for bankers, manufacturers, artists and doctors (for example das Kavalierhaus (1770), The Brose Park (1818) and The Bürgerpark (1854-1864)), as well as many gardens. Many houses were used as embassies during the times of DDr. At the turn of the century, Pankow was a preferred tourist objective. There were many taverns and dance halls. The Skladanowsky Brothers of Pankow showed in the cinema “Tivoli” the first images on film in Germany. In those days, the people bathed in the Panke (wild with whirlpools). Today this image is hardly imaginable, as the river now flows quietly through Schlosspark and Bürgerpark. Still, it’s essential to take a dip, since there has been free bathing in the most beautiful part in Pankow since the 60´s (which is only 3 minutes walking distance from the apartment). In Pankow there is a great deal of beauty and sights to see, for example: the Jugendstil City Hall, with a magnificent room for weddings; an apartment building originally decorated by a craftsman from Pankow (around 1900= in the Heinstrasse, where one may also find the Chronicle of Pankow; the Jewish orphanage; the Amaleen Park (1896/97); the Bürgerpark Park with a magnificent entrance door, real turkeys and roe deer that wander freely through its meadows; the children’s farm, and much more. To visit Potsdam, with its many castles and gardens (declared by UNESCO a cultural patrimony), one should plan on a street car ride of approx. 1 hour (approx. 30 minutes with a vehicle). Also, the magnificent surroundings of Berlin (many lakes and forests) are easily accessed from here (for example the Wandlitz Lake approx. 20 km, with the “Heidekrautbahn” at approx. 30 minutes). |
