Berlin-Spandau: The district Spandau has belonged to Berlin since 1920, however until today it has kept a certain independence and visiting Spandau still is a bit like touring another town. The citadel, one of the most important buildings of Spandau, was constructed in the 16th century in Italian style and lies idyllic on an island between the rivers Spree and Havel. The old town of Spandau leads you into the past with the Nicolai Church and the remains of the fortress dating back to 1200. Every year, the narrow streets host the biggest Christmas market in Europe. The landscape of this area is rich in lakes, rivers and woods. The Siemensstadt (Siemens City) stands as the more modern aspect of Spandau. In the western part of this quarter both architectonically and socially valuable flats were constructed for the wellbeing of the workers. In the northern part the Wasserstadt (Water City) of Spandau offers family friendly living near the water. On the former British military airport Gatow in the south of Spandau is the Airforce Museum of the Bundeswehr.
