Location |
Pankow: Towards the end of the 19th century when Berlin started to turn into a metropolis, wealthy citizens started to settle down around the small village Pankow and the palace Niederschönhausen. The bourgeoisie flair is still present in the dignified environs of the Amalien Park. Since the 1950s Pankow, as East Berlin’s exclusive residential area, is associated with politicians, famous artists, authors and scientists who used to live in this part of the city. The castle Schönhausen, where formerly Queen Christine (the wife of Friedrich the Great) resided, became the residence of GDR president Wilhelm Pieck and accommodated visitors such as Fidel Castro or Mikhail Gorbachev. |
